Anthony Ernest Pratt, a British factory worker and pianist, invented the board game Clue in 1943. Pratt was inspired to create the game during World War II when he was bored and couldn't attend the murder mystery parties he enjoyed playing at European hotels. He wanted to create a version of the game that people could play at home. Pratt and his wife Elva designed the game, which is based on deduction and features characters like Mrs. White, Mr. Green, and Colonel Mustard. 
In 1949, Clue was first manufactured in the United Kingdom by Waddingtons and brought to the United States by Parker Brothers as Cluedo. The game has been updated and relaunched many times, and is currently owned and published by Hasbro. In 2017, Clue was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. As of 2023, it's the second most popular board game in the world, with over 150 million copies sold. Clue has also inspired other entertainment, including a 1985 film, escape rooms, and walking tours.
